I think that Ralph is more popular than piggy because Ralph is physically appealing, and acts powerful. In the book Lord of The Flies when all of the boys were voting on who would be chief Ralph was picked because of his size, attractive appearance, most powerful, and he was the one who blew the conch shell to gather a meeting. This shows that generally more attractive people are more popular, and also that people who act popular and powerful are the ones who will be treated and seen as popular. Ralph is different from piggy because while ralph is strong and good-looking, Piggy is overweight and unattractive. Piggy also portrays himself as smart, and generally many people interpret that as geeky. Therefor i think Ralph is more popular than piggy because he looks and acts the part, and piggy does not.

I agree with this. Looks and attitude have a lot to do with who is popular.

I agree with this. Someone's appearance may determine whether they are popular or not.

I agree with Alexsis because that is exactly how the author, William Golding , described Ralph and Piggy. Ralph was the attractive born-leader, while piggy was the chubby kid with glasses who continuously speaks about his auntie. In other words, the way in which Ralph's character is portrayed makes it extremely evident that he is much more popular than Piggy.

I agree with why Alexsis said because Ralph is more of a natural born leader with the appearance and charisma people look for Ina leader. While Piggy may be smart he is the chubby, unattractive kid. The author clearly portrays that Ralph is more popular than Ralph.

I think that Ralph is portrayed as a more popular figure than Piggy because he is the ideal leader. Like many have already said, Ralph's size and attractive appearance appealed to the boys. In addition, he was the one who had blown in the conch shell which had rounded up the others. On the other hand, Piggy, an overweight asthmatic boy with thick glasses was thought of as a physically, and mentally weak figure. First impressions, as hinted, are very important. It was because the boys saw that Ralph had a more confident air about him that they chose him to be the Chief; they thought of him as a strong, potential leader.

I agree with Karina that Ralph was made the leader as a result of his physical attributes, but I also think that Piggy is almost an unseen leader. Ralph does listen to him, such as when Piggy told Ralph to blow the conch shell to call everyone together. I think that although Piggy is not credited as the leader, he does lead the group through advising Ralph.

I think Ralph is more popular than Piggy because Ralph can act as a leader. Although Piggy is smarter, everyone likes Ralph's personality better. Ralph has all the common characteristics of someone who is in charge: he's good-looking, charming, and tough.

I agree with Leah, most people do look for that in a leader, especially when they're as young as these boys.

Ralph is found more popular then Piggy because even though Piggy has the intellect that a leader should poses, Ralph, being more attractive and fit becomes someone that people would rather be lead by. Piggy lacks the athletic and medical abilities that would make him an ideal leader. By having asthma and not being in good shape makes the situation for him harder to poses power. Ralph on the other hand was the one that blew the conch ,first to take lead, and is physicaly capable of being a leader.

I think Ralph was more popular than Piggy for two reasons. One was that he was the kid with "the trumpet-thing". When the boys are voting for who is to become the chief, many of the boys like Ralph because he has the conch. Some of the boys shout things like; "Him with the shell!", and "Let him be the chief with the trumpet-thing." Another reason he was more popular than Piggy, were his features. "But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance..." Piggy was a kid who was round and always referred to his Auntie, even though she wasn't around. Those are two reasons why Ralph was more popular than Piggy.

I think Ralph is more popular than Piggy because he immediately was in charge. He was the one who blew in the conch shell. This made an impact on the boys, they saw him as the one that brought them together; if he could bring them together, who says he can't keep them together? He was approved of by Jack, because he lets him lead the hunters. If Jack, the Scary, older, and "wiser" (he is older, no?) approves then Ralph is perfect. Jack really settled for the job of Hunter, because he could see that most were leaning toward Ralph. If he lost the power of being the best, then all would be lost. Piggy, on the other hand, is an intellectual. He thinks and plans, but no one listens because Jack and Ralph ridiculed him. Just the name, not even human, puts him below the others. Also he is fat, leaving him out of breath, and not looking strong. His mind may be strong, but he has no physical power. Having physical power is a sign you can control this, that you can help. if you can't do physical things how can you hold up the figurative foundation of that society? You can't, so you are shunted aside, like Piggy is.

I agree with Eleanor. If he started out as the leader he should stay leader. Right? I also think Ralphs look may have played a part.

I believe that Ralf is more popular than Piggy for several reasons. One of those reasons is, sadly but true Piggy's large size and his constant excuse of having asthma which prevented him from blowing on the conch to call all of the other kids to them. Which leads to my next reason. Since Piggy was not blowing and Ralf was it seemed to the other kids that Ralf was the one in charge because he was the one who had thought of a way to gather them all. This seemed to everyone that Piggy was a lower social status than Ralf because of who was blowing the conch. The final reason is that his name is simply making fun of him every time you call for him. This is why I think Ralf is more popular than piggy.

I think that Ralph was more popular than Piggy because Ralph had more of a leaders attitude, these were young boys and they probably felt that Ralph had more of a leaders attitude because he was the one that brought them all together by blowing the conch shell. Also I think Piggy's size, and name for that matter, effected Piggy's popularity. Most kids so young don't want a larger boy to be their leader. Piggy also keep making the excuse that because of his asthma he couldn't do certain things, such as swim, run, and blow the conch shell.
