Course Objective: English 9 is a standards-based curriculum aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The emphasis is on making meaning of both literary and informational text. Students will be exposed to a broad spectrum of readings produced by both American and foreign-born authors. Attention will be given to the elements of fiction, the structure and purpose of informative text, and the development of literary themes. The emphases of composition in English 9 are narrative and informational forms, and students will have the opportunity to write for a variety of purposes. Students will also gain experience with contemporary means of presenting the synthesis of their own research. In discussion, presentation, and writing, students will be expected to work closely with text, regularly citing specific quotations and passages in support of their own interpretation or analysis. Grammar and vocabulary instruction will be ongoing and unit-based.
Materials: It is required and expected that you come to class prepared everyday. This includes pens/pencils, notebook, book, homework as assigned, and any other required materials.
Absences and Late Work:
• If you miss a class it is your responsibility to get all of the notes and assignments prior to the next class.
• You will not be allowed to make up any work including quizzes and tests if the absence is unexcused.
• Any makeup work must be completed within three class periods. Exceptions will be made for students who are out more than one day.
• If a student is absent on the day of a quiz or test, it must be made up on the first day back (either before school, after school, or during a study hall)
• All assignments must be turned in on time. Late work will be penalized.
Expectations:
• To earn a good grade means you must actively participate in class in a manner that is conducive to the learning environment. This includes doing your homework and coming to class prepared.
• Be on time! If you enter the class after the bell without an excused pass, you will serve a teacher detention.
• No discipline problems will be tolerated. Any disruptions in class that prevent others from learning are considered discipline problems.
Grading:
• Grading will be on a weighted system. Tests and essays account for 50% of your grade, quizzes 30%. Homework and Classwork/Participation are each worth 10%.
• In addition to the above, you will be required to write a 5-7 page research paper. The paper will count for roughly 25% of your second quarter grade. If you are caught plagiarizing in any way you will automatically receive a failing grade for the thesis paper.
The most important thing for you to remember is that I am willing to set up an appointment with you regarding extra help, questions or concerns.
